Learn About Cremation Costs, Prices, Fees and Rates in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (More Info >)

There are certain costs associated with cremation. Many people choose cremation because they see it as a less costly, but equally respectful, alternative to full burial. However, they do so without fully understanding the cremation process and fees involved. Once you have a full understanding of these, you can make an informed decision on whether to move forward with cremation and, if so, what kind of cremation you wish to have. The primary factors that determine actual cremation rates are transportation costs, storage, the actual cremation process and the placement of the cremated remains.

Median Cost of a Funeral with Viewing and Burial or with Viewing and Cremation

Funeral homes in Pittsburgh offer a number of distinct services including transferring remains to the funeral home, body preparation (i.e., embalming, casketing, cosmetology, dressing and grooming), use of facilities and staff for viewing, reception, and a funeral ceremony, use of a hearse, use of a service car/van, and a basic memorial printed package (i.e., memorial cards, register book, etc.). They also sell products associated with funerals and burials, like caskets, urns and vaults.

According to the National Funeral Directors’ Association the median cost of a funeral with burial has risen by approximately $2,000 between 2004 and 2014, from $6,580 to $8,508—figures that include the cost of a vault and a “basic services fee” averaging $2,000 (in 2014). The basic services fee is a flat-rate charge assessed to every funeral or cremation and covers the funeral home’s required services (i.e., what they are required to provide) and associated overhead, including filing paperwork, obtaining permits and the death certificate, making arrangements with the cemetery, crematory or other outside parties, and properly storing remains.
