Graceland Cemetery - The Getty and Ryerson Tombs by Louis Sullivan

Chicago Architecture Center (CAF) docent Mary Jo Hoag discusses two of Louis Sullivan's famous tomb designs: the Getty Tomb and the Ryerson Tomb.

The Getty Tomb

The Carrie Eliza Getty Tomb, located in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois, United States, was commissioned in 1890 by the lumber baron, Henry Harrison Getty, for his wife.
It was designed by the noted American architect, Louis Sullivan of the firm Adler & Sullivan.
Getty became familiar with Sullivan's work from the architect's various Loop projects as well as from the mausoleum (also in Graceland) Sullivan designed for Getty's late partner, Martin Ryerson.
The Getty Tomb has been said to be the most significant piece of architecture in Graceland cemetery and the beginning of Sullivan's involvement in the architectural style known as the Chicago School.
The tomb, which stands on its own triangular plot of land, is composed of limestone masonry construction.
Roughly a cube in shape, the bottom half of the tomb is composed of large, smooth limestone blocks.
The upper half is composed of a rectangular pattern of octagons, each containing an eight-pointed starburst design.
The cornice is banded with smooth limestone above intricate spiraling patterns below, and the top-edge of the roofline is straight and horizontal on the front and back and scalloped in a concave fashion on the sides.

The Ryerson Tomb

The Martin Ryerson Tomb is an Egyptian Revival style mausoleum designed by Louis Sullivan and completed in 1889.
It is in the historic Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
Martin L. Ryerson was a wealthy Chicago lumber baron and real estate speculator.
He lived from 1818 to 1887 and during his lifetime he, and his son Martin Ryerson, Jr., commissioned several Chicago works by architect Louis H. Sullivan.
The Ryerson Tomb was commissioned by Martin Ryerson, Jr. in 1887, and completed by Sullivan, lead designer at Adler & Sullivan, in 1889.
The Ryerson Tomb is in the Lakeside section of Chicago's Graceland Cemetery, near the intersection of cemetery roads Main, Lake and Fairview Avenue.

The Abbey Mausoleum at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma was designed in the art deco style by California architect Clarence Lee Jay, a 1920’s sensation in California.

On 25 March 2022 the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust officially opened the Gallery of the Saints Mausoleum – stage 4 at Keilor Cemetery.
The Gallery of the Saints Mausoleum, completed in 2021, consists of stately colonnade galleries extending down the east and west sides, adjoining a serene courtyard.
The Gallery of Saints Mausoleum was the third stage of mausoleum development in the complex designed by Harmer Architecture.

One of the crowning Midcentury glories of Chicago’s inner suburbs is 1969’s Resurrection Mausoleum, in the small southwestern ville of Justice, Illinois.
The world's largest stained glass window is actually in the Resurrection Mausoleum at the Resurrection Cemetery.
It contains 2,448 panels and is 22,381 square feet. The building was constructed in 1969. The design of the building is reminiscent of a classic Greek temple.

The Beechwood Mausoleum sits on a high point overlooking the main entrance of the Beechwood Cemetery in Ontario.
Construction began in the late 1920s and the historic mausoleum was completed in 1930.
Architect William Ralston of Windsor, Ontario, the mausoleum’s designer, employed the Gothic style of architecture, adapting to modern use the features of buildings erected in medieval times when the builders of cathedrals made wall openings for windows and doors in the shape of pointed arches.
They constructed vaulted ceilings and decorated walls with sculptured forms representing foliage, birds, animals, humans and mythological creatures, often grotesque in appearance.
Symbols of a religious nature, such as the cross, were often carved into walls.
The Beechwood Mausoleum’s Gothic architecture, first introduced to Ottawa when the Parliament Buildings were constructed, represents a revival of certain features of ancient buildings, particularly elaborately-carved stonework depicting mythological and other creatures, and the use of finely-crafted stained glass windows.

In addition to the decorative moldings each arched window has small decorative points projecting from the curves in the arch—this is known as cusping.

Cornelius Kingsland Garrison was born in 1809 and died in 1885.
The famed architect Griffith Thomas designed his Green-Wood Cemetery mausoleum at Brooklyn, New York.
For the Commodore’s mausoleum, Thomas combined several architectural styles—Byzantine, Moorish Revival, and Islamic—to create a striking tomb with an onion dome topped with a cross over the entrance.
Onion domes are characterized by having a bulbous onion shape which is larger than the drum on which it sits.
A Moorish Revival archictectural design style was used to construct the Larendon Tomb in the Metarie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana.
The grand tomb is made of Belgian limestone and was believed to have been quarried and carved in Europe and then shipped to the Metarie Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana, to be constructed.
The design of the tomb is Moorish Revival—with a modified dome resting on the four horseshoe arches characteristic of Islamic architecture.
